If you like exploring nature and finding new discoveries that are right under your feet, then a rock geology excursion is for you. You’ll get up close and personal with the lay of the land and uncover gems and minerals that exist naturally in this part of the world.

Pre-Planned Excursions

Join a local touring company and let your guide take you to a mineral rich area in Ontario’s Highlands. Tours often follow set paths but can also be customized to meet your needs. The excursion can last anywhere from a few hours to a full day and most expeditions require you to have at least a moderate physical fitness level.

Go off the beaten path and search for local gems and minerals at your own pace and comfort level. There are many popular sites that are known for geological diversity that you can explore yourself on a self-guided excursion.

Mineral Collecting Field Trips, Bancroft – Visit the Bancroft Mineral Museum Display at the Bancroft Gem & Mineral Club Museum to purchase a guidebook featuring close to 20 collecting sites accessible to the public
Marmora Mine, Marmora – Known to be rich in iron content, the Marmora mine was closed in 1979 after being mined for almost 1.3 million tons of iron ore
